Cars Are to Blame for Most Motorcycle Accidents

|

The Florida Department of Transportation released a study on the main causes of motorcycle accidents in the state. According to a 10-year analysis, the drivers of passenger cars are usually to blame for motorcycle accidents.

How Often Do Cars Cause Motorcycle Accidents?

When motorcycles collide with other vehicles, it’s the drivers of cars and trucks who are at fault 60% of the time according to researchers. Typically, the driver of a car or truck collides with a motorcycle after failing to give the biker the right of way.

Motorcyclists themselves are still responsible for a good portion of the multi-vehicle motorcycle accidents that happen every year. It’s also important to note that motorcycles are involved in far more single-vehicle crashes than car drivers. While 34% of motorcycle crashes involve just one vehicle, only 19% of car crashes are single-vehicle accidents.

Why Do Car Drivers Fail to Yield the Right of Way?

Car drivers cause a large portion of motorcycle crashes because they aren’t paying enough attention and don’t check their blind spots before turning or changing lanes. Due to the smaller size of motorcycles, car drivers often overlook them, especially while they are distracted. Some car drivers also make mistakes around motorcycles because they have trouble perceiving their speed and distance.

Motorcyclists Can Sue At-Fault Passenger Car Drivers

If you were injured in a multi-vehicle accident while riding your motorcycle, you might want to file a lawsuit against the passenger car driver who was at fault. In a personal injury claim, you may be able to pursue financial compensation for your medical expenses, your lost income, and your pain and suffering.
